'The cat no one wanted': Couple adopts shelter's longest resident feline whose trust in humans had been broken by previous owners who returned him, giving him another chance at a life he deserves

There is no such thing as an "unwanted" cat. There are simply cats who have not found their forever humans yet. 

It might sound weird, but generally, we kind of love hearing stories about cats who "no one" wanted. Let us explain. It's not because we like their situation. It's the worst. It breaks our hearts to hear about cats who are waiting for their forever homes and are not able to find them. But we know… we know that if we came across their story, if it got big enough to hit our timelines, then it is going to be big enough to hit other people's timelines as well. And once that happens, the cat community has an amazing way of getting those "unwanted" cats adopted. 

Because, like we said, there is no such thing as an unwanted cat. The internet has proved that. The internet was able to find homes for the cat that no one wanted because of its unique markings that made him look a little weird and the 14-year-old cat who no one wanted after his owner passed away. The internet even managed to get the "world's worst cat" more than 100 adoption applications. Because once we put our minds to something, we can make it happen. So really, if this couple didn't adopt this "unwanted" kitty themselves, they should have posted about it online. We would have made it happen. But this time, we didn't need to.

    This is Mango, a four year old cat my husband and I adopted from our local shelter. He had actually been the shelters longest resident--captured in June and adopted by us in late September.

    He was there for so long because he has FIV. The shelter advertised him heavily for weeks. They even moved him to a lobby kennel so that he'd be the first cat folks would see...and still no dice.

    Until August--a couple came and actually adopted him!....Only to return him a week later, staying they "didn't want to deal with the FIV." The shelter staff said he became withdrawn, depressed, and aggressive towards humans after that.

    He was traumatized. His trust had been broken. I bawled like a baby reading his story. I sent his info to my husband. He came in the livingroom where I was crying and then nodded while saying, "Ok. I'll go get him tomorrow."

    When my husband bought him home the next day, he hid behind the TV for two hours. But that same night? He was in bed with us, purring SO loud, showing his belly, and kneading on us. We taught Mango he could love and trust again. And he brings up endless happiness. We will never, ever give him up. He's our only child.

  • This is something that we don't hear about often. Of course, we know that cats who are adopted and then returned don't have it easy, but hearing about the way that this experience immediately affected this kitty is absolutely heartbreaking. These people knew the kind of cat that they were adopting. Adopting him and bringing him back a week later is something that should have never happened. They should not have adopted him in the first place, giving him all that hope and then taking it away. They broke this cat's heart, and we can only say thank you for these other people who adopted him and mended his heart over again.

  • He looks so, so comfortable in these pictures. We cannot even imagine the aggressive, detached heart that the shelter described after he was abandoned. He looks like he was more than made for the spoiled indoor life. This is where he belongs, and although we are so upset that he had to go through such hardships to get here, we are truly so happy that he is finally here, where he belongs. We wish all of you many happy and healthy years together, and we hope you will share many more updates about the little guy in the future.

    dalalxyz People are so uneducated about FIV, it is not a death sentence for a cat and can be easily managed, even in a multi-cat home it's hard to transmit. Thank you so much for rescuing this baby and sharing his story, he is so lucky and I'm sure you feel you are too. I'm glad you have each other.
